On Oct. 27, APU’s men’s soccer team defeated Dixie State 4-2 in their final home game to seal in a 9-0 home record for the season. For Senior Day, the team honored eight seniors in the last home game of their careers: Jeff Dunn, Joe Geletko, Nick Markham, Trenton Titus, John Tribbey, Michael Sahagian, Kevin Yang and Hiroshi Metzger.
The Cougars had several shots on goal early in the game, but they were all blocked. In the 17th minute, Dixie State’s Francisco Rivero scored the first goal of the game, putting the Red Storm up 1-0. The rest of the first half was somewhat uneventful, with both teams struggling offensively. Just before the half, in the 38th minute, APU tied the game 1-1 with a goal from junior business administration major Oktay Bulut assisted by freshman accounting major Keyran Kelly.
APU got off to a good start in the second half and controlled the ball well. Freshman applied exercise major Luke Ackerman scored on a corner kick from junior economics major Garrett Mehrguth in the 63rd minute to put the Cougars up 2-1. Bulut added to the lead in the 74th minute with his second goal of the game off of a penalty kick. Shortly after, Ackerman scored his second goal of the game as well, giving APU a 4-1 lead.
Dixie State made a late surge, scoring a goal in the 80th minute, but failing to make up any more ground, finalizing the score at 4-2.
The Cougars play Dixie State again in their next game on Saturday, Nov. 3, in St. George, Utah.
On Oct. 27, APU women’s soccer beat Dixie State 3-0 giving them their ninth consecutive win, and earning senior liberal studies major and goalkeeper Michelle Wieland her 35th career shutout; a number which leaves her one shutout away from second place on APU’s all-time list. The Cougars honored 11 seniors for Senior Day comprising a senior class which head coach Jason Surrell said is, “One of the best ever.” The team’s senior roster consists of: Shannon Righetti, Madeline Arterburn, Lynsey Browne, Rachael Harding, Natalie Sun, Jacqueline Conforto, Molly Lavin, Emily Wood, Heidi Witschi, Markie Gleason and Michelle Wieland.
The Cougars controlled the ball for the majority of the game, and got off to an early start when senior communication studies major Emily Wood scored her sixth goal of the season in the 13th minute. Late in the first half, senior liberal studies major Natalie Sun scored the 31st goal of her career, giving APU a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to control the game, taking several shots and scoring their third goal in the 75th minute, courtesy of business administration major Heidi Witschi. The goal was her fifth this season. Dixie State fizzled in the remainder of the game; APU went on to claim their fifth shutout in their last six games.
The APU women’s soccer team will play Dixie State once more in their last regular season game on Saturday, Nov. 3, in St. George, Utah.
