APU women’s basketball capped off a trip to the islands with a 81-67 win over Hawaii-Hilo. The Cougars jumped out to a 38-34 halftime lead before outpacing the Vulcans 43-33 in the second half to cruise to the win.
The difference in the game came at the charity stripe, where Azusa Pacific made 31-of-36 free-throw attempts compared with just 16-of-24 for the Vulcans.
Juniors Kelly Hardeman and Cydnie Jones each contributed 23 points and 10 rebounds for APU.
Hilo’s McKenzie Mangino put up 25 points and five rebounds in the loss.
The win is the team’s fourth straight, improving to 14-7 (10-4 PacWest) and tying for third in the conference.
APU: Troy Leaf 23 pts, 4 ast
Hawaii-Hilo: Vandyon Lockett 29 pts, 2 ast
The Cougars erupted for a 109-69 win over the Vulcans. APU scored the game’s first 20 points and cruised from there, scoring a season-best 56 points in the first half.
They shot an incredible 60 percent from the field and 58 percent from behind the arc in the win.
All 12 Cougars played and scored, including six in double-digits. Senior guard Troy Leaf led with 23 points for APU.
Hilo’s Vandyon Lockett led the game with 29 points. He made 6-of-8 3-pointers for the Vulcans.
The Cougars win kept them atop PacWest standings, improving to 19-3 (12-2 PacWest).
Both teams return to the mainland for showdowns at California Baptist Feb. 7.
