On Thursday, Feb. 7 APU Cougars lost against the Cal State San Bernadino Coyotes 9-5.
In the first game of the three game series, APU gave up five errors which lead to five Coyote runs.
APU’s record now is 1-2 after beating Claremont-Mudd Scripps 4-1, but then losing to Concordia 11-2.
San Bernadino is now 3-0 after beating Bethesda Christian 9-1 and then 15-0.
Last season, the Cougars played the Coyotes three times and won one of those games. APU had lead the all-time series against San Bernadino 13-12 and holds a 9-4 record at home.
In the top of the second inning San Bernadino put the first run on the board after designated hitter Andrew Harrison hit a solo homerun to right field. Coyote Second basemen Jake Pilkerton tried to gain another run by doubling to left field, but then was called out after left-fielder Joseph Daris fired the ball in to third basemen Daniel Gonzales to tag Pilkerton out at third.
In the fourth inning Pilkerton scored again when he reached base by getting walked, then advancing on a passed ball to second, later taking third base after a wild pitcd, and got another run after right fielder David Silvas hit a sacrifice fly.
Center fielder Matt Kimmel started the fourth inning with a pop up to right field. Kimmel hit his first homerun of the season against Concordia, but against San Bernadino he was 1-for-4.
In the fourth, APU finally got on the scoreboard after right fielder Domenic Biagini tripled to center field and brought home Gonzales ,who had walked, and catcher Brendan Casey, who reached base on an error. Following Richie Brown’s double to score Biagini APU now took the lead 3-2.
San Bernadino earned another run in the fifth when first basemen Trevor McMaster sacrafice flied to center and third basemen Curtis Cassise scored.
The Cougars got their second error in the sixth, which advanced Pilkerton to take second. He later then scored when short stop Christian Gomez hit a single and San Bernadino took the lead again 4-3.
The errors kept on coming for the Cougars. In the top of the seventh Coyote left fielder Remington Miller reached on throwing error by the shortstop, after that error San Bernadino tacked up another three runs, including a homerun by catcher Michael Castello.
Kimmel who was 0-for-3 until the eighth when he got a double and advanced to third when the infield had fielding error. This helped second basemen Ryan Henley score another run for the Cougars. Kimmel then scored after third basemen Dusty Sanderson did a sacrifice bunt.
In the ninth, APU gave away another error to McMaster, who scored after designated hitter Billy Hamilton homered to right center.
At the end of the ninth the Cougars were not able to earn any runs giving lead San Bernadino the 9-5 victory.
The teams will play against each other again tomorrow at Fiscalani Field in San Bernadino at 2 p.m. The last game of the series will be on Saturday at APU at 1 p.m.
