Women’s basketball holds off Dominican

Dominican women’s basketball cut Azusa Pacific’s 22-point lead in the middle of the first half to a final 60-54 win for APU in Saturday’s PacWest matchup.

APU jumped ahead by 11 less than four minutes into the first half. The Cougars maintained the early lead through halftime. They returned to the floor in the second half with a 35-21 advantage.

Azusa Pacific continued to control the game by double-digits until a 7-0 run by Dominican midway through the second half to cut the deficit to nine. The Penguins eventually got down the Cougars’ lead to three with 12 seconds remaining. A completed free throw from junior forward Kelly Hardeman combined with a pair from sophomore forward Maggie Dumphy clinched the game for APU.

Two Cougars finished with double-double performances. Hardeman led with 18 points and 12 rebounds and junior guard Cydnie Jones contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Katie Powell wrapped up double-digit scoring for the Cougars with 12 points.

Allyssa Weatherd led the Penguins with a game-high 24 points.

APU improves to 9-5 (5-2 PacWest) and will host Academy of Art at the Felix Event Center Jan. 12. Tipoff will take place at 5:30 p.m.
