Women’s basketball returns home after road win

Azusa Pacific women’s basketball defeated Dixie State 73-61 on the road Saturday.

APU jumped out to a 19-9 lead within the first eight minutes of play. The Red Storm came back with a 13-0 run of their own three minutes later. The teams continued back-and-forth until APU eventually finished the first half up 36-33.

The Cougars maintained a lead throughout the second half before closing the game with the largest lead of the night.

Azusa Pacific out-rebounded Dixie State 50-38, coming away with 20 second-chance points. The Red Storm led the PacWest in rebounding entering the contest.

“We knew if we could out-rebound them we’d be in good shape,” said APU head coach T.J. Hardeman.

Each of the five Cougar starters finished in double-digit scoring, led by sophomore forward Maggie Dumpy with 18 points. Junior guard Cydnie Jones posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cougars lead the series against the Red Storm 5-0 since joining PacWest competition in 2012.

APU will return to action on its home court by going against the Point Loma Sea Lions on Wednesday.
